Where Did My Shorts Go?

Have you ever lost a piece of clothing, but you know it's here somewhere? I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I do manage to do things a little differently.  Last Sunday when I was getting ready to go out and jog I could not find my shorts. I had everything set-up in my office, but I couldn't figure out where my shorts went to. It was a little cool, so I went out to run in my sweatpants and it wasn't too warm.

When I returned from running I got ready to take a shower and took my sweatpants off and found my shorts-I was wearing them.  In the middle of the night I put my sweatpants on top of my shorts and totally forgot about it. Am I at the age I have to leave a note for myself, "I'm wearing shorts?"

Don't answer that question. I'm still under 60 unlike one of my OLD friends, Larry, who just turned 60 the other day.

"Some Good News:

I know some people reading this post are aware of this new webcast, since they told me about it. For some of you others, I don't want to leave you out.  John Krasinski, an actor who is famous for appearing in the television show, "The Office," has put together a short newscast of fifteen minutes containing only good news.

As you can imagine this was right down my alley.  I have watched the first three episodes and spent the entire time grinning from ear to ear.  The question he asks in the first episode is, "why isn't there a news show that is entirely dedicated to good news?" The answer unfortunately is that bad news sells and people are used to hearing bad news.

He has has gathered good news stories from many parts of the country and the world and he has presented them in a fast, witty, and engaging way.  In the first three episodes he has shown some good stories concerning this virus and has paid tribute to medical professionals in a very unique way.  It really is a must see for everyone.

I already posted his show on the Uber/Lyft Facebook site.  I was thinking it's too bad I'm not driving Uber/Lyft riders, because I would certainly promote it to them.  While running this morning it dawned on me that I am delivering to people in the medical field and others and I'm going to start promoting it to some of my customers I deliver to beginning tomorrow.

While looking the show up online, I noticed you could write a review, so I couldn't resist writing the below review:

Congratulations and thank you John. The show is delightful, informative and extremely well written. If you weren't already an actor you'd be getting offers from all over the country. My business name is The Sunshine Man and I am actively promoting this to people I come in contact with. Keep spreading your sunshine John, it's needed and greatly appreciated.

I Can Run Faster With These New Sneakers!

Over twenty years ago we took our son to get new sneakers.  He was maybe 7 or so.  When the sneakers went on his feet he started running in the store and said, "I can run faster in these!" After twenty years I have to admit, my son was right. (about this)

I got my first pair of running shoes this week.  Although they look pretty nice, they are not fancy.  I put them on this morning.  My back was a little sore from sleeping too much. (over 7 hours) The sun wasn't out, but there was a nice breeze.  I walked a little after not stretching properly and then I started to run at a slow pace.  With the wind whistling through the trees I was sure I heard a voice yell, "Run Forest Run!" (Dad: reference to the movie Forrest Gump) Then, I thought I heard the Rocky theme.  I was running faster than I've ever run!

Yes, it's an exaggeration, but I did run a longer distance than I ever have and I think it was the running shoes.  My son and my youngest daughter said they can't wait to run with me and I told them I'd be good for the first 200 feet.  I'm waiting for my oldest daughter to challenge me, since we probably run about the same speed. (when I'm not wearing my new running shoes)

Earlier in the year I decided to walk the four mile Ravenel bridge in Charleston.  I would have in March, but the virus postponed that.  I was going to walk halfway and then back to my car.  Now, I have a bigger goal: in the fall I'm going run half way and run or walk half way back.  I may have to get another "new" pair of running shoes for the fall.

There's A Massive Chicken Wing Surplus!

I only have two questions: where and how can I help? Are you kidding me? Because of the virus there are hundreds of thousands of chicken wings that are not being eaten? This is serious, not something to be joked about. Do you know how good chicken wings are? Maybe not as good as drumsticks, but they are really good!

The College Basketball Tournament is the second biggest time of the year that people eat chicken wings next to The Super Bowl.  But, now there's nowhere for all those wings to go!  They are freezing wings so they can be used after the virus breaks.  I'm free on the weekends, I would love to help.

Why don't we have "The Chicken Wing Challenge."  You buy a hundred wings which half goes to a charity and everyone goes on Zoom and you have three hours to eat the hundred wings while watching others eat wings.  If you eat them all, you get another hundred wings for free.  We can solve this surplus by eating together.  Who's in?

What's Good About This Virus Crisis

Very simply, what we're going through today is horrific, tragic, devastating, awful, and worldwide.  I've mentioned before that my favorite quote of all time was by Napoleon Hill, an adviser to two Presidents of The United States.  He said, "Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed on an equal or greater benefit."

There have been a lot of good things that have come out of this crisis for me, but everyone is different and they will find good things in their own life.  Here is a list so far of good things I have found:

1. Each morning for the past two weeks on the Uber/Lyft Facebook site I have been posting a positive message for other drivers so they get some good news.  It's been good for me and for other drivers.  I end each of my posts by mentioning one good thing in my life due to this crisis.

2. On the Uber/Lyft site drivers are always complaining about riders who don't have car seats for their small children which is a safety hazzard-there won't be any comments about that for awhile.

3. I haven't bought gas on the weekend now in three weeks which is something I haven't done in close to two years.

4. My home office is now cleaner than it's been since we moved in and my wife is happy about that.

5. Finally, we put a bunch of things up on my home office walls and it looks great.

6. My wife and I have been doing serious cleaning an sanitizing of my car every weekend.

7. I get to spend two days back to back each weekend with the love of my life. (yes, my wife)

8. I have had two dentist appointments canceled, who wants to go back there?

9. The government is sending most of us money!

10. I learned why there was a flu shot-over 30,000 people die each year in this country from the flu.

11. My friend Gene, who drives a truck around the country, usually calls me on the weekend to talk.  It's very difficult to reach me since I usually have a rider in my car.  The last three weekends it has not been a problem.

12. Not working on the weekend makes me look forward to Monday more than I used to.

13. My wife has been painting up a storm, we now have a freshly painted porch, garage floor and part of the kitchen. She did a great job.

14. Our neighbor a couple doors down stopped by last weekend and insisted that my wife accept a $100 check since she is not working.  She had offered to drive him and his wife down to Charleston for a doctor appointment for no charge and he wanted to thank her for the offer.

15.  I just paid $1.51 for gas and it's still dropping!

16.  I have now not worked at all for four weekends this year after doing that only five times all last year.

17. There are a lot less cars on the road, so if you need to get somewhere, it is much easier.

18. I no longer have to get a customer to sign my phone for a delivery.  It's much easier and faster and safer too.

19. I've been able to give my wife a morning hug on each weekend morning, something I haven't been able to do for a long time.

20. I'm sleeping in on the weekend-until almost 6 am! I can't believe it!

A Different Kind Of Life

I know from time to time people will think to themselves-what if I had a very different life? What if I didn't have to go to work, didn't have to pay my mortgage, what if I had all the time in the world to do what I want to do? It reminds of the classic Twilight Zone episode, "Time Enough At Last," starring Burgess Meredith. He's a bank teller who loves to read so much he can't put books down.  He's probably been fired from many jobs and his job situation and his personal life is in jeopardy, because he can't stop reading.

His life changes drastically when he is in the bank vault and a nuclear explosion occurs and he survives.  He's the only survivor and he's depressed until he find the town library and thousands of books that he plans on reading.  He has hope until he steps on his glasses and he has all the time he ever wanted, all the books he ever wanted, but he can't read them.

It is one of the great episodes in this series with a classic shocking ending.  What does that have to do with us? For some people this virus crisis has given them a lot of extra time, but there's no place to go since most things are closed.  In some cases, mortgage or car payments don't have to be made right now, but they will at some point in the future.  You would like to visit people, but that's the one thing you can't do in person.

I'm still working a shorter schedule as a courier delivering to two hospitals and Wal-Mart and some other medical offices.  I now have more time in the afternoon and my weekends are free, it's a very different kind of life right now.  One of my friends, an Uber/Lyft driver, had one of the funniest comments about his life, "I've been training my whole life for this lifestyle of staying home, sleeping a lot, watching TV, and eating bacon."

I'm actually not doing any of those things, but the important thing is what I am doing and what you are doing.  There are always things that we can't control, but there are always things we can control.  Focus on what you can do.

How Low Will Gas Prices Go?

I remember very clearly the first time I went to a gas station in South Carolina.  We had just arrived here a couple days after Christmas in 2017.  I paid $2.17 for gas and I was thrilled! For quite awhile I paid just under $2.20 and it was just hard to believe gas was that cheap here.

Eventually the prices went up some, but less than a year later they started dropping and dropping and dropping.  When they hit $1.74 I was literally pulling into stations when I didn't need gas.  I figured I'd get whatever I could before the prices went up again.

I never thought I would see prices get that low again. It was just one month ago that I was paying around $2.20 per gallon and it's hard to complain about that.  However, prices started dropping and dropping and dropping.

Today, most gas stations are between $1.70-$1.90, which is a big range.  However, I know of three gas stations near each other on the main road, Rt. 17 in Myrtle Beach, that are selling gas for $1.53! It dropped five cents from yesterday.  Will it go under $1.50?  It appears it will any day.  Could it hit $1.40 per gallon?

Of course, this is due to the virus, but it is hard to believe that you can buy gas for around $1.50 per gallon.  I'm driving less miles now and with gas being so cheap, it's really going to be amazing to see how little I've paid for gas this past month.
