Wearing A Mask or Getting A Flu Shot

"Choices, Choices, Choices-we all have them." Over thirty years ago, I received a resume and a cover letter that started with those words.  I loved the cover letter and actually saved it and I remember the woman's name was Deborah or Debbie.  Unfortunately, I never got to interview her for the job, because she certainly was creative. (I was hiring for a high school rep)

The other day I had an unusual choice-wear a mask or get a flu shot.  I deliver to two hospitals and in the Myrtle Beach Hospital I have to get a pass to get to an office on a restricted floor.  They decided to put someone else in charge of the passes and now I could get my own permanent pass.  I was told to stop at Human Resources because they needed more information.

As it turned out, they took my picture for the pass and told me I couldn't keep the pass, I would still have to pick it up from someone each time I needed it.  Then, things got odder.  They asked if I had a flu shot and I told them that I never have had one.  They gave me a choice: they would give me a free flu shot or I would have to wear a mask while I delivered in the hospital.

I've been delivering to the hospital almost every day for eighteen months now, but apparently this has been a rule the entire time.  I don't like wearing anything on my face ever and since I'm sometimes in the hospital for an hour, this was an easy choice.  I didn't want the flu shot either, but I gave in to it.

The first question I was asked is: "are you allergic to eggs?"  I guess something in the shot has something you find in eggs? Am I getting a shot of yolk? Probably not, but I did get the shot.  The one side effect is that in the first 24 hours you could have numbness in your extremities.  I have passed that test with flying colors.

A long time ago I heard someone say that the most powerful word there is, is choice.  The power to choose what to do, where to go, who to be, and how to think.  We all do have choices every day that we make and as Indiana Jones was told at the end of the movie, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", we should all "choose wisely."  On a much less famous note, I remember the funny farewell that one of my riders gave me.  He had been up all night and at 6:30 am on a Sunday morning I dropped him off for what he said was, "a hook-up."  As he walked away from my car, he stopped, turned around, and said to me, "make good choices." (that still makes me laugh)

The Democratic Primary(if you're interested)

I waited about two years for this battle, because I knew that this would be an unforgettable fight.  It's not that I'm a Republican and I want to see this, it's more that I am a "political junkie" who loves the race for the White House.  There's a lot of talk in the past week that the race is just about over, but don't believe it.

First of all, most of the time when there are a number of candidates in a primary, one person does not dominate it and lead all the way.  Usually, the person who wins goes through some difficult primaries and they are just about counted out before they turn everything around.  I've been reading several political books the past six months that were written by the people who ran the last several campaigns and it is common for many of these campaigns to be on the edge of failure.

Here's my rundown on the remaining candidates:

Bernie Sanders: You have to admire a guy of his age running another good campaign after falling short against Hillary Clinton.  He's sticking to who his is and what he's been his whole life and he's proud of it.  The primaries are not winner take all(of the delegates) which works to his favor and also being on the very far left of the party, he has a dedicated group of supporters.  This helps with a lot of competition because it splits the vote up. (as it did for President Trump in the Republican race four years ago)  He is not going to win, because the majority of the party are much more moderate than he is.  I cannot imagine these voters rallying around a Socialist.  If he announced that Hillary Clinton was going to be his running mate, maybe that would change things, but that will not happen either.

Joe Biden:  He's been my pick for close to two years, but he has been disappointing.  Rumors have it that President Obama was very concerned that he might embarrass himself by running and it has been borderline.  I think he should announce Senator Kamala Harris his running mate this week before South Carolina votes and that will help him win the primary which he desperately needs.  Don't count him out yet. They say it's "not over until the fat lady sings," and although she's not singing, she may be warming up in her dressing room.  I would not be surprised if President Obama is the only one that could talk him into dropping out.

Mayor Pete: I like him, but I don't agree with everything he says.  He is very young, very bright and I would not be afraid if he was elected.  It's tough for him to win against so many much more experienced candidates, but he has done very well so far.

Elizabeth Warren: Although she has struggled over the past few weeks, she has run a good campaign.  She's not as far left as Bernie Sanders, but she's younger, looks much younger and is a much better talker.  Her attacks on Michael Bloomberg were as good as it gets.  Maybe Joe Biden talks her into being his Vice-President.  I'd say it the other way, but I don't think Joe Biden would settle for Vice-President.  She's far from done in this race.

Amy Klobuchar: I like her too and she's got experience and she's not scary.  I would not be extremely upset if she somehow won this race, but she still has a long hill to climb up.  She would be a credible running mate for someone.

Tom Steyer: His radio ads are very good and he comes across as being very sincere.  He has spent an obscene amount of money and has no chance being really involved at the end of this race.

Micheal Bloomberg: Just the amount of money he's spent should upset most Democrats.  He is a moderate, but does have a progressive record he can run on.  He could easily be a moderate Republican which he was.  If Bernie Sanders wins the nomination, I would expect Bloomberg to run as a third party which should clinch the second term for President Trump.  Bloomberg has said he wouldn't do that, but he also said he wasn't going to run.  President Eisenhower once said, (paraphrasing) that when he got flak from both sides he knew he was doing the right thing.  If Bloomberg was President he would get flak from both sides, much more than President Trump has.  He gave a scathing speech of Donald Trump at the Democratic Convention four years ago while showing little support for Hillary.  Maybe, Hillary as his running mate would make him more satisfactory to Democrats? However, 6-13% of Bernie Sanders supporters in the primary four years ago, wound up voting for Donald Trump, would they really support Hillary now?

This primary will go down in history as the most interesting because it pitted young vs old, liberal vs moderate, white vs non-white, male vs female, and the establishment vs a socialist.  Don't miss watching this.

"Do You Believe In Miracles?"

In case you missed this in the news this weekend, Saturday was the 40th Anniversary of one of the greatest sports moments in history and is considered the greatest upset in sports history.  It was the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York and the date was February, 22, 1980.  Playing in the semi-finals, The USA hockey team, which was made up of college players, had to face what was considered the very best hockey team in the world, The Soviet Union.  The Soviets had not lost in competition since 1968 and had beaten All-Star teams in the United States.  Before the Olympics in an exhibition game these two teams played and The USA Team was embarrassed by the Soviets.

The final score forty years ago was USA 4 and the Soviets 3.  If you've never seen the final moments of this game or haven't seen it in awhile, you should look it up online under "Miracle on Ice."  As the seconds were counted down, with the American crowd on their feet cheering deliriously, the broadcaster was Al Micheals.  He raised his voice and said, "Do You Believe in Miracles?" "Yes," was his answer as time ran out on the Soviets.  The USA goaltender, Jim Craig, leaped into the air and his teammates jumped on him.  A few days later, The USA team won the gold medal and stood proudly together at the medal ceremony receiving their gold medals.

Sports doesn't get any better than that moment.  Miracles don't happen very often in sports. (although The Chicago Cubs did win The World Series in 2016 after 108 years)  Most of the time,we associate miracles in a religious way.  However, doctors preform miracles on a regular basis across the world and there have many miraculous inventions and discoveries over the years to better society.  When you see a magnificent sunrise or sunset, you may think you are seeing a miracle. When a baby is born, it really is a miracle.

A few years ago, I was driving in Pennsylvania somewhere delivering magazines and I was changing radio stations and I heard the end of a song.  I was so moved by the song I wrote down a few words and found it online and it's on my iPod and I hear it regularly today.  When you read the words below you can see how great the songwriting is.  If you look this up online and hear the song, it is a beautiful sounding song also.  This song is about as positive as a song can be and it talks about seeing miracles happen and having faith and belief in yourself.

Forty years ago a group of college students did the impossible.  Their coach, Herb Brooks, told the team before the game, " “You are born to be a player. You are meant to be here. This moment is yours. You’re meant to be here at this time."

Tomorrow is Monday, my favorite day of the week. It's a new week-make something good happen.  You can do it.

What Faith Can Do By Kutless -

Lyrics
Everybody falls sometimes
Gotta find the strength to rise
From the ashes and make a new beginning
Anyone can feel the ache
You think it's more than you can take
But you are stronger, stronger than you know
Don't you give up now
The sun will soon be shining
You gotta face the clouds
To find the silver lining
I've seen dreams that move the mountains
Hope that doesn't ever end
Even when the sky is falling
I've seen miracles just happen
Silent prayers get answered
Broken hearts become brand new
That's what faith can do
It doesn't matter what you've heard
Impossible is not a word
It's just a reason for someone not to try
Everybody's scared to death
When they decide to take that step
Out on the water
It'll be alright
Life is so much more
Than what your eyes are seeing
You will find your way
If you keep believing
I've seen dreams that move the mountains
Hope that doesn't ever end
Even when the sky is falling
I've seen miracles just happen
Silent prayers get answered
Broken hearts become brand new
That's what faith can do
Overcome the odds
You don't have a chance
(That's what faith can do)
When the world says you can't
It'll tell you that you can!
I've seen dreams that move the mountains
Hope that doesn't ever end
Even when the sky is falling
I've seen miracles just happen
Silent prayers get answered
Broken hearts become brand new
That's what faith can do
That's what faith can do
Even if you fall sometimes
You will have the strength to rise

SNOW FLURRIES ARE COMING! SNOW FLURRIES ARE COMING!

I didn't want you to think I was too excited, so I only used two exclamation points.  I know that snow flurries are not a big deal in a lot of places, but if you live in South Carolina and haven't seen snow fall in over two years-it's a big deal.

Right now the forecast is that they expect flurries very early tomorrow morning in Conway where the warehouse I work is.  Myrtle Beach looks like it's going to just miss it because it's going to be in the mid to high 30's in the morning.  I really do have a legit chance of seeing snow and I will take pictures.

It was only two weeks ago that I was delivering boxes to one of my customers when I told her I didn't mind the cold, but what I wanted was five minutes of flurries.  She was mortified and then looked straight up and said, "Dear Lord, please give this man what he wants, but only on him."  Everyone I've told this story to has laughed and I told her how funny people think it is.

Today, I could not help myself.  There's a chance of flurries and I had to drive right past my customer who made that prayer.  I had to thank her for making it happen.  I had nothing to deliver to her, but I went into her building anyway.  I could not get that silly grin off my face, because I knew she would be laughing when I told her.

I said, "I don't have anything for you today, but I have to thank you.  You know what's coming tomorrow-snow flurries."  She was laughing and said, "you are too happy."  She made another prayer and said that, "it should only fall on my house."  I told her that I would not tell anyone her name or where she worked, since some people might think she has a real connection.

All my life I have heard people say on a Friday, "TGIF", or "Thank God It's Friday."  I have never said it, because Friday never thrilled me. (my favorite day of course is Monday)  However, tomorrow is Friday and I am going to say it tomorrow- "TGIF", "Thank God It's Flurrying."  Of course, there may not be anyone around at 4 am to see the flurries, but I'll say it anyway.

If You Leave Your Belt At Home, Will Your Shorts Fall Down?

This is one of those questions that a lot of people are talking about.  Of course, this didn't happen to me, so I wouldn't have a good answer for it.  It's not like I could have done this twice in the same week-it's really not possible. Or, here's a better question, "do men wear belts to hold their pants up or is it a fashion statement that makes everything else look good?

If you don't have a belt and your shorts or pants are tight on you, you're probably safe.  You're just fitting into them, so where are they going to go?  But, what if they are big on you, how do you keep them up? How many times do you pick them up and how high do you put them?  It would probably help if you wore a jacket so people could not see you didn't have a belt.  Maybe, if you live in the south where it's warmer it wouldn't be noticeable, since people dress casually and your shorts might look like a bathing suit.

Wearing a belt is probably more of a fashion statement, although there are a lot belts that are just plain black.  Maybe, black goes with everything and makes everything look better?  I'm probably not the best person to ask since I'm wearing sweat pants right now, but these are some amusing questions that you'll never think about again.

It's Girlfriend's Day?

I have to confess that I never heard about this day and it's possible that some of you haven't heard about it either.  I would have guessed that it's the day that a couple girls who are friends, go out and have a good time somewhere doing something.  You know, a girl's day or night and that's that.  It's a lot more interesting than that.

Thursday is February 13th and it's girlfriend's day, or so I've been told.  I tried to look this up and I came up empty, no information available.  Supposedly, "girlfriend's day" is recognized in the restaurant business as the day before Valentine's Day.  A married guy will bring his girlfriend into a restaurant to celebrate the holiday and then the next day he brings his wife into the same restaurant to celebrate the same holiday.

Somehow, this is not unusual.  What bothers me the most is that this bright guy is going to the same restaurant two days in the row with two different women.  Besides being a jerk, let's face it-he's an idiot.  There are no other restaurants you can go to? Seriously? Where are you living?  Somehow you are able to manage to keep a girlfriend secret from your wife, but you can't pick a different restaurant?

I'm frequently reminded of the funny quote from one of my riders this year.  He said, "sometimes you just have to get the stupid out of people."  Please hurry and get it done-these guys are idiots.

If Women Had An Adam's Apple....

I will admit that I knew what an Adam's apple was and I knew where an Adam's apple is. (under your chin)  However, I didn't know men only had them, why is that?  So, I had to do some research just for you, since this is one of those fascinating topics you will never read about again.  My wife, who knows almost everything I don't know, told me that only men have an Adam's apple.  However, after doing some research I found out that women can have an Adam's Apple too, but it's most commonly found in men.

What is the function of the Adam's Apple? Absolutely nothing, it serves no purpose.  I bet you didn't know that and I'm pretty sure you couldn't care less.  But, this is short and you learned something completely useless, so it's not a complete waste.  Maybe my next blog will be about unicorns?

"Sometimes Your Blogs Are So Stupid, I Can't Believe You're Blogging About This."

And, you didn't think I would go there? One of my readers, who will remain nameless, actually said this! Can you believe it? Yes, I agree with it too.  Isn't that what blogging is all about?  Then, the same person said, "Sometimes I look for your blog post and I'm disappointed there isn't one."  Of course you are, I understand completely.

On any given day each of us has hundreds and hundreds of different thoughts that run through our mind.  Sometimes they are really quick and you almost immediately forget what you just thought. (that happens to all of us, even if we're not over 90)

Many of these thoughts or ideas may only be interesting to you and you're the only who is ever exposed to the thought.  The thought or idea isn't written down, because let's face it-most people don't like to write and don't want to write about it.

That's where we may differ. I've always enjoyed writing and I may enjoy it more than I ever have.  If someone else doesn't like it or no one reads it, I'm fine with that.  I'm actually writing for me first and anyone else next.  Maybe when I retire I'll become a writer?

Will Gas Go Under $2 Here Again?

When I arrived in Myrtle Beach at the end of December 2017, I was thrilled to pay only $2.17 per gallon.  It was just over a year ago that the gas prices in our area hit a ridiculous low of $1.74 per gallon.  This is when I was pulling into stations to get gas when I didn't need it, because it was so ridiculously low.  The prices did go up of course and well over $2.00 per gallon.

Around the holidays two months ago, the prices here were running $2.25 to $2.36.  All of a sudden, the prices started dropping and dropping and dropping.  Yesterday, the lowest price I saw was $2.01 and that station this morning was $1.95.

Having watched the prices closely the past two years, I can honestly tell you I don't have a clue to explain how the prices work here.  They can jump up or drop twenty cents on any day.  Two stations across from each other can be twenty cents apart in price.

How low will they go?  They can't really get back to $1.74, can they? I doubt it, but anything under $2.00 per gallon is terrific and a lot better than prices in most parts of the country.  This is a very "small price" I have to pay to "become a Southerner," and I have no regrets.

It's A Great Day-To Take A Nap?

For those of you who know me(all 6 of you reading this), you know it's not unusual for me to say that a particular day is a great day.  However, it's a great day to take a nap? That is not me, for sure.  Don't misunderstand this, I can close my eyes for 10-15 minutes pretty much any day or any time.  Having worked in the newspaper business for close to ten years and having worked early morning hours for the past few decades, it's easy for me catch a few winks.  I still can fondly remember that purple dinosaur, Barney, and that great theme song to start and end his television show.  My son would be watching the show and I would be watching him, until the song came on at the beginning and I would close my eyes and wake up at the end of the show! (great show)

For me, the definition of taking a nap is when you plan on it, go into a room, maybe set an alarm, or have some wake you, or you expect to sleep at least a half hour or so.  This is something I do rarely,  or almost never.  There is anything wrong with it, but if it's a great day, I'd rather be awake doing something.

Sunday morning really was a great day in the Charleston area.  My passenger was a cadet at the Citadel College.  We were talking about sleeping and how difficult it is for him to wake up each morning at 5 am. (I did tell him I wake up between 3:30-4:30 without an alarm) He said it's really hard to wake up at that hour with people yelling at you, which is something I've never done.  He was heading back to his dorm room and he was going to lock the door and take a nap.

That is the moment it happened.  I looked at the sunny skies, the trees blowing gently, and the temperature already in the mid-60's and I said, "It's a great day to take a nap!"  I asked him if he had ever heard that phrase before and he said he hadn't.  All of a sudden, I could see it on  bumper stickers, on t-shirts, signs at sporing event!  Maybe, this a million dollar idea!

Last week I was a little under the weather and for three straight days I took a scheduled nap since I really needed it.  When was the last time I took a real nap three straight days? I had the chicken pox in 1986.  It might be 34 years! How long is that? Ronald Reagan was President and The New York Mets won The World Series!

So, today was another great day here.  It was 73 degrees and after finishing work relatively early, I came home and did not take a nap.  I was relaxing reading all the great political stories and I started writing this blog.  I was tired and could have rested, but, I resisted.  Our oldest daughter called before I finished this and I went out into the living room to talk with her.  I sat in the comfortable chair next to my wife and I talked and listened and closed my eyes.  I got a few winks, just a few.
